@Jason I wrote this article after a marathon session of reading and learning about Twitter. What I've learned since writing it is in total agreement with you: there are a TON of people with 10k followers, 50k followers, and more...but they are often total fakers, and they add no traffic or value to your Twitter experience.

I still don't know exactly how they grow their accounts so quickly (other than there being a lot of automated scripts involved), but I'm with you and Dan et al. for now: if you're famous, your Twitter account will be instantly huge (see: Bill Gates). Otherwise, tweet well and the rest will work itself out, but spend time focusing on good blog posts, not brilliant ways to game the Twitter system, in general.

I enjoyed it. My blog is http://jkarsh.wordpress.com/ and my twitter feed is @jkarsh, please retweet.

I kid, but not about the post. It's good and I think the one thing you can get lost on a bit is what the number of followers means. It seems pretty apparent once you peck around Twitter for a while that you can get tens of thousands of followers if you want them. But more than likely they're going to be unqualified Twitter users. Accounts designed for MLM things and the like.

I agree with Dan Zarrella, have good tweets, follow good people, put your tweets in places people will see them--by using good hashtags and the like--and (at least theoretically) the people will come.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information!

You're welcome, Kim. I wrote this quite a while ago, and I feel I've learned a lot since then. I'd probably write it totally differently if I were to start over again, but hopefully you found what's there valuable : )

@christy I think this would have been more useful if I had explained the fundamental use of Twitter -- spreading brand awareness -- in more depth. It was over people's heads because I had been on a 24 hour Twitter reading binge and really, really wanted to post something about what I had been reading. But I forgot that just 24 hours before, I was in your position! Twitter is strange and great...the more you learn, the less you understand...haha

Great title...definitely got my attention! And great article/blog (well, I assume it is...it's mostly over my head. LOL!). I registered on Twitter, but that's as far as it's going for now b/c I have NO ideas about most of this stuff. LOL! Good for you for tackling it, though :)

@The Increasingly-Famous Jon Consider it RT'd. To be honest, I think the answer is that very few make a lot, and most make very little. The Pareto principle to the extreme. However, in learning about Twitter, and what these successful bloggers are doing, I still think I gained some insight into how to spread my blog's message. Maybe I won't make a ton of money, but it's a better resume line item (and let's be honest, just more fun) to have a popular blog than a vacant blog. Same goes for Twitter, which still intrigues me to no end...
